Leo is a musical prodigy with a "photographic" memory.
On The Border
Leo is first introduced as "Joe" as he stalks a sleeping Larry in New Hampshire. He is feral and violent, carrying with him a large butcher knife. He prepares to kill Larry, but is stopped by Nadine Cross, who he is traveling with. They continue to follow Larry into Maine, where Leo finally tries to attack Larry. Larry defends himself and Nadine begs him not to hurt "Joe". Eventually Larry agrees to take Nadine and (more reluctantly) Leo with him.
Leo is initially jealous and distrustful of Larry but warms to him when Larry begins to play guitar and sings. When Larry allows Leo to try the guitar himself, Leo is able to replicate one of the songs almost note for note, although not flawlessly, revealing Leo as something of a musical prodigy.
"He was perhaps thirteen, perhaps ten and tall for his age. He was naked except for Fruit of the Loom shorts. His body was tanned an even mahogany, except for the startling white band that began just above the waistband of his shorts. His skin was covered with the bumps of mosquito and chigger bites, some new, mostly old. In his right hand he held a butcher knife." (Chapter 44)
"He's like a savage in a National Geographic TV show." (Chapter 44)
